In Ponterotto, in the valley between the left shore of river Pesa and the hill’s slopes, were brought to light, a series of structures belonging to buildings of different chronology and function, abandoned for catastrophic events and deprived from all the materials.
With the construction of the ancient structures between the end of XV and the XVIII century, also a series,were realized also a series of drainages systems to drain the area of the spring waters.
The area of Ponterotto appears so long frequented since antiquity thanks to the abundance of spring waters and of fertile earth, moreover of very fine clay, called “mattaione”, apt to the construction of brick and baked clay furnishings.
